A mixture of 1-benzyl-5-hydroxy-2-oxo-3-phenyl-1,2-dihydro-[1,7]naphthyridine-6-carboxylic acid methyl ester (600 mg, 1.55 mmol) and N-bromosuccinimide (291 mg, 1.63 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (4.2 mL) was refluxed for 3 h. After the mixture was cooled to r.t., the solvent was evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography (0-60% EtOAc/hexanes+2% AcOH) to give 560 mg of the title compound as a yellow solid. MS: (+) m/z 464.97, 466.94 (M+H, 79/81Br)
