A mixture of 5-dimethylamino-3-ethoxycarbonyl-2-methoxycarbonyl-penta-2,4-dienoic acid methyl ester (5 g, 17.5 mmol) and benzylamine (2 mL, 18.4 mmol) in EtOH (30 mL) was refluxed for 5 h. The mixture was cooled to r.t., concentrated in vacuo, and taken up in ether. The solution was washed with 1M HCl and water, and then dried over MgSO4. Evaporation of the solvent in vacuo afforded 5.77 g of the title compound as a viscous orange oil. MS: (+) m/z 338.06 (M+Na).
