A mixture of 5-dimethylamino-2-ethoxycarbonyl-3-methoxycarbonyl-penta-2,4-dienoic acid ethyl ester (5 g, 16.7 mmol) and benzylamine (1.9 mL, 17.6 mmol) in MeOH (30 mL) was refluxed for 5 h. The mixture was cooled to r.t., concentrated in vacuo, and taken up in ether. The solution was washed with 1 M HCl and water, and then dried over MgSO4. Evaporation of the solvent in vacuo afforded 4.1 g of the title compound as a dark brown oil. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 200 MHz): δ=7.20-7.40 (m, 6H), 6.56 (d, 1H, J=7.0 Hz), 5.15 (s, 2H), 4.42 (q, 2H, J=7.4 Hz), 3.88 (s, 3H), 1.40 (t, 3H, J=7.0 Hz).
