A mixture of 5-bromo-2-methyl-6-oxo-1-(tetrahydro-pyran-4-ylmethyl)-1,6-dihydro-pyridine-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (0.906 g, 2.63 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (0.516 g, 2.89 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (64 mg, 0.26 mmol) in CCl4 (30 mL) was refluxed for 16 h. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo, and the residue was chromatographed (0-60% EtOAc/hexanes) to give 511 mg of the title compound. MS: (+) m/z 424.10 (M+1).
