Procedure
A mixture of (S)-5-bromo-2-methyl-6-oxo-1-(1-phenyl-ethyl)-1,6-dihydro-pyridine-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (2.34 g, 6.69 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (1.31 g, 7.35 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (0.16 g, 0.669 mmol) in CCl4 (70 mL) was refluxed for 16 h. After cooling the mixture to r.t., the precipitate was removed by filtration. The filtrate was evaporated in vacuo, and the residue was chromatographed (0-25% EtOAc/hexanes) to give 2.67 g of the title compound as a white solid. MS: (+) m/z 452.06 (M+Na).
