Procedure
A mixture of 5-bromo-1-(2-ethyl-butyl)-2-methyl-6-oxo-1,6-dihydro-pyridine-3-carboxylic acid methyl ester (5.72 g, 17.3 mmol), N-bromosuccinimide (3.39 g, 19.1 mmol), and benzoyl peroxide (0.42 g, 1.73 mmol) in CCl4 (170 mL) was refluxed for 16 h. The resulting suspension was filtered, and the filtrate was evaporated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel chromatography (0-20% EtOAc/hexanes) to give 4.9 g of the title compound as a yellow viscous oil. MS: (+) m/z 432.10 (M+Na).
