Reaction Steps

Furthermore, (2-((Tert-butoxycarbonyl)oxy)-6-(ethoxycarbonyl)phenyl)zinc pivalate (1u) was dissolved in 2.0 mL of dry THF and 4-bromobenzonitrile (164 mg, 0.91 mmol) and Pd(OAc)2 (4 mg, 0.02 mmol) as well as S-Phos (16 mg, 0.04 mmol) were added and the mixture was stirred at 22° C. for 12 h. Then sat. aq. NH4Cl (10 mL) was added and the aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc (3×20 mL). The combined organic phases were dried (Na2SO4). Evaporation of the solvents in vacuo and purification by flash chromatography (silica gel, ihexane/EtOAc=12:1 to 6:1) afforded the benzonitrile ethyl 4′-cyano-6-((tert-butoxycarbonyl)oxy)-[1,1′-biphenyl]-2-carboxylate (262 mg, 79%) as a pale yellow oil (entry 27).
