A mixture of 3-[2-chloro-5-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-3-oxopropanenitrile (1.2 g, 4.8 mmol), 2-aminoacetaldehyde diethyl acetal (0.77 mL, 5.3 mmol) and toluene (30 mL) was stirred under reflux for 5 h under nitrogen atmosphere in the Dean-Stark apparatus. The mixture was evaporated in vacuo and used in the next step without further purification.
