To a solution of the 7-(methoxycarbonyl)-8-nitroquinoline (3.00 g, 12.9 mmol) in toluene (52 mL) at rt under N2 was added MeOTf (7.31 mL, 64.6 mmol). The solution was warmed to 75° C. and stirred for 16 h. The resulting mixture was concentrated and the residue was triturated with ethyl acetate to afford 7-(methoxycarbonyl)-1-methyl-8-nitroquinolinium trifluoromethanesulfonate as a white solid.
