1M aqueous sodium hydroxide (50 mL) was added to a solution of methyl 6-[bis-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino]-3-(2-hydroxymethylfuran-3-yl)-2-(4-methylbenzene-sulfonyloxy)benzoate (Intermediate 5, 3.82 g) in methanol (100 mL) and the mixture was stirred and heated at 45° C. for 1.5 hours. The mixture was evaporated to dryness and the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate and acidified with acetic acid. The organic layer was separated, dried (Na2SO4) and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness and the residue was purified by chromatography on silica, eluting with a mixture of ethyl acetate and cyclohexane with a gradient of 10-50% to give methyl 6-[bis-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)amino]-2-hydroxy-3-(2-hydroxymethylfuran-3-yl)benzoate (2.65 g) as a white foam.
