A mixture of 2-fluoro-5-nitrophenol (4 g, 25 mmol), 2-(2-bromoethoxy)tetrahydro-2H-pyran (4.4 mL, 28 mmol) and potassium carbonate (4.2 g 30 mmol) in DMF (50 mL) was stirred at 50° C. for 16 h. The reaction was cooled to room temperature, diluted with EtOAc and H2O. The aqueous layer was separated and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic extracts were washed with H2O (5×'s to remove DMF) and brine and dried over sodium sulfate. The resulting residue was purified by column chromatography ISCO Rf (40 g column) eluting with a gradient of 100% hexanes—1:1 hexanes:EtOAc to provide 2-(2-(2-fluoro-5-nitrophenoxy)ethoxy)tetrahydro-2H-pyran XXII.
