To a cooled solution of 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)cyclopropanecarbonitrile (35 mg, 0.2 mmol) in ethanol (100 μL, 2 mmol) was added acetyl chloride (170 μl, 2.39 mmol). The mixture was shaken at room temperature for 16 h, then was concentrated in vacuo and dried. To the residue was added a freshly prepared saturated solution of hydrogen chloride in ethanol (1 mL). After 16 h, the reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title compound (56 mg) as an oil which was used without further purification.
