Procedure
A solution of thionyl chloride (1.7 ml) in chloroform (10 ml) was added dropwise with stirring to a solution of 1-(2-phenoxyethyl)piperidin-3-ylmethanol (5.0 g) in chloroform (70 ml) at 0°-5° C. After the addition the mixture was boiled under reflux for 2.5 hours. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was triturated with ether and filtered to give 3-chloromethyl-1-(2-phenoxyethyl)piperidine hydrochloride, m.p. 125°-127° C.
