Procedure
4.0 ml of pyridine and 4.0 ml of acetic anhydride were added to 4.00 g (14.6 mmol) of (S,S)-1,1'-bis(1-hydroxyethyl)ferrocene and the resulting solution was stirred overnight at 25° C. After hydrolysis of the excess anhydride using 100 ml of water, the hydrolysis mixture was extracted twice with 200 ml each time of diethyl ether and the combined organic extracts were dried over magnesium sulphate. The solvent was taken off and the residue was dried to constant weight in a high vacuum.
