A mixture of (S)-6-[(2-chloro-α,α,α,6-tetrafluoro-p-tolyl) oxy]-β-phenyl-1H-benzotriazole-1-ethanol (1.0 g, 0.0022 mole) in chloroform is treated with MnO2, (1.0 g, 0.0115 mole) stirred at 40° C. for 18 hours and filtered through a bed of diatomaceous earth. The filtrate is concentrated in vacuo to give a residue which is chromatographed using silica gel and 10% tetrahydrofuran in carbon tetrachloride to yield the title product as a white solid, 0.42 g, mp 84°-85° C., characterized by elemental and NMR analyses.
