A solution of 2-[5-(ethoxycarbonylmethoxy)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthyl]ethyl N,N-diphenylcarbamate (0.83 g) and 1N sodium hydroxide solution (2.1 ml) in dioxane (5 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes and washed with ether. The resulting aqueous layer was acidified with 10% hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was powdered from 2-propanol to afford 2-[5-(carboxymethoxy)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-naphthyl]ethyl N,N-diphenylcarbamate (0.46 g) as a colorless powder. mp: 145° C.
