Participants
| Role | Name | HCID | Charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reactant | Ethanol | HCID 702 | — |
| Reactant | 3'-Hydroxyphenylacetic acid | HCID 12122 | — |
| Catalyst | Sulfuric Acid | HCID 1118 | — |
| Product | Ethyl (3-Hydroxyphenyl)acetate | HCID 572437 | — |
Reaction Steps
A solution of 55 g of 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid in 400 ml of 100° ethanol is refluxed overnight in the presence of a few drops of concentrated H2SO4. It is evaporated to dryness under vacuum and the residue is taken up in ethyl ether and washed with water and then with a saturated aqueous solution of NaHCO3. After drying over MgSO, followed by evaporation, 58 g of an oil are obtained.
