With pump 46 operating to pump thiazin stain from reservoir 41 to solenoid valve S-4 and pump 47 operating to pump eosin stain from reservoir 42 through the normally open side of resting solenoid valve S-5 to solenoid valve S-4, operation of solenoid valve S-4 will control flow and mixing of the thiazin and eosin stains. Solenoid valve S-4 may be set to actuate on a 250 millisecond cycle as described above to blend the eosin stain and the thiazin stain in a desired ratio. Solenoid valves S-3, S-1, and S-5 act as control valves in resting position to block all flow of stain. Actuating solenoid valve S-3 allows flow of the alternating thiazin and eosin stains as controlled by solenoid valve S-4 through the normally closed side of solenoid valve S-3 to mixing chamber MC-1 and nozzle 16. The alternating thiazin and eosin stains mix as they flow through the lines and mixing chamber MC-1 so are a substantially homogeneously mixed concentrated staining solution when sprayed from nozzle 16 onto any slides rotating in the carousel past nozzle 16.
