Reaction Steps
Heat a mixture of 4-Hydroxy-6-(2-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-nicotinic acid ethyl ester (9.0 g, 0.029 mol) in POCl3 (22 g) at 110° C. for 2 hours. Evaporate the POCl3, and add ice (100 g) followed by careful addition of saturated NaHCO3. Extract with EtOAc, dry (MgSO4), and evaporate to provide 4-chloro-6-(2-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-nicotinic acid ethyl ester as a brown oil.
