Reaction Steps

The oily product from Step A was refluxed in 15 ml. of 10% (w/v) ethanolic potassium hydroxide under nitrogen for 10 minutes. After cooling the solvent was evaporated. The residue was extracted with 2 × 20 ml. of hot isopropanol which was then filtered and evaporated to give solid 2-methyl-3-hydroxy-4-hydroxymethyl-5-ethynyl-pyridine, m.p. 170°-171° C.
