Reaction Steps
A mixture of formic acid and acetic anhydride (1:1, 20 ml) is prepared at 0° to 10° C and added to 10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene-10-methylamine (15.0 g). The mixture is stirred for 1 hr. and then allowed to stand for 18 hr. Water (100 ml) and ice chips are are added. After stirring for 15 min., the mixture is rendered alkaline with dilute NaOH solution and extracted with ether. The extract is washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to afford N-formyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene-10-methylamine, m.p. 109° - 111° C, δmaxCHCl3 3445, 3350, 1685 cm-1, after recrystallization from ether.
