A mixture of ethyl 2-[4-(4-chlorophenyl)phenoxymethoxy]-3,3,3-trifluoro-2-trifluoromethylpropionate (502 mg.) potassium hydroxide (88 mg.), methanol (4 ml.) and water (1 ml.) is stirred at 20° C. for 22 hours, then evaporated in vacuo. The residue is dissolved in water, and the solution is acidified with 3 N-hydrochloric acid. The solid which separates is filtered off. Crystallisation from a mixture of cyclohexane and light petroleum (b.p. 40°-60° C.) gives prisms (204 mg.) of 2-[4-(4-chlorophenyl)phenoxymethoxy]-3,3,3-trifluoro-2-trifluoromethylpropionic acid, m.p. 134°-135° C.
