Reaction Steps
To stirred ethanol (50 ml) at 0° C. was added acetyl chloride (2.5 ml, 35 mmol) dropwise. After stirring 5 minutes, this ethanolic HCl was added to lH-benzimidazole-2-yl-4-pyridinyl-methanone (5.0 g, 22.4 mmol) in ethanol (200 ml). This solution was charged with platinum IV oxide (0.5 g) and hydrogen (50 lb/in2) and shaken for 20 hours. The solution was filtered, concentrated, and the resulting solid was recrystallized from methanol with 2-butanone to afford lH-benzimidazol-2-yl-4-piperidinyl-methanol dihydrochloride as the desired product m.p. 270-272° C.
