3.6 g of ethyl 4-cyano-5,5-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-4-pentenoate was dissolved in 10 ml of dioxane and 3 ml of a 5 N aqueous solution of NaOH was added thereto. The obtained mixture was stirred at 60° C. for five hours. After the completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was acidified and extracted with ethyl acetate. Thus 3.2 g of the title compound having the following physicochemical properties was obtained. This product could be further purified by recrystallizing from ethyl acetate/hexane.
