Procedure
20 g of 2-acetylamino-4-chloro-5-nitrobenzonitrile obtained in Step (4) above was mixed with 110 ml of diethyleneglycol monomethyl ether, 11.4 g of potassium hydroxide was added thereto, and the mixture was reacted at 80° C. for 4 hours. After the completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was cooled, then 250 ml of water was added thereto with stirring. The crystals thus-deposited were collected by filtration, washed with a mixture of water and methanol (1:1) and dried. Yield: 14.5 g (53.7%). Melting point: 106° to 108° C.
