A stirred mixture of 1-benzyl-4-(cyclohexylmethylamino)piperidine-4-carboxamide (8 g, 24.32 mmol), 8 ml of trimethoxymethane, 2 ml of acetic acid and 65 ml of toluene was refluxed for 48 hours. The mixture was concentrated. The residue was dissolved in water, made alkaline with aqueous ammonia, and the mixture was extracted with chloroform. The extracts were dried (MgSO4) and concentrated. Recrystallization of the residue from ethyl acetate gave 6.3 g (76.5%) of crystals, mp 117°-118° C.
