A mixture of ethyl-E-3-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbenzofuran-2-yl)propenoate (225 mg, 0.9 mmoles) (From Example 159), 2N sodium hydroxide (4 ml) and methanol (15 ml) was stirred at room temperature for 36 hours. The mixture was concentrated, acidified with 20% citric acid solution and extracted with ether. The ether solution was dried with Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to obtain 190 mg of the title compound, m.p. 246°-248° C. (dec.).
