Dichloromethyl methyl ether (5.3 g equiv) was added slowly to a well stirred mixture of methyl 4-(3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxyphenyl)butyrate (9.75 g) and titanium tetrachloride (31 g equiv) in dichloromethane (200 ml) at 0°-5° C. The mixture was stirred for 1 hr at 5° C. and at room temperature for 2 hrs. The mixture was poured onto ice-water which was then extracted with dichloromethane. The dried (MgSO4) organic fraction was evaporated to give methyl 4-(3,5-dimethyl-2-formyl-4-methoxyphenyl)butyrate as a pale yellow oil. Pmr spectrum (CDCl3 ; δ in ppm): 1.69-2.98 (6H,m); 2.31 (3H,s); 2.52 (3H,s); 3.67 (3H,s); 3.69 (3H,s); 6.91 (1H,s); 10.50 (1H,s).
