To 27.8 g. of 3-hydroxymethyl-1-methyl-2-phenyl-pyrrolidin-5-one in 40 ml. of potassium hydroxide dried pyridine was added in portions of 0°-5° 29.4 g. of p-toluenesulfonyl chloride. The orange solution was then stirred at 15° C. for 4 hours and then decanted into 180 ml. of ice cold 10% hydrochloric acid. The resulting solid was collected by filtration and washed with water and air dried. Washing with ether provided 37 g. of crude product.
