Reaction Steps
A solution of 25 g of 1-benzyl-2-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-5-oxopyrrolidin-3-carboxylic acid in 247 ml of boron trifluoride methanol was refluxed for 7 hours and then concentrated in vacuo to a solid. The solid was dissolved in chloroform and the chloroform washed with a saturated sodium carbonate solution and then with a saturated sodium bicarbonate solution. Drying (Na2SO4), filtration, and concentration in vacuo provided 18 g of off-white crystals, m.p. 97°-102°.
