2,4-Dibenzyloxyphenylacetic acid [IX] (1.4 g) was dissolved in anhydrous benzene (30 ml) and then thereto was added thionyl chloride (5 g) and the mixture was left to stand at room temperature (20° C.) for 20 minutes. The reaction mixture was concentrated to dryness under reduced pressure to obtain crude 2,4-dibenzyloxyphenylacetyl chloride [X]. This was used for the subsequent reaction without purification.
