A mixture of 0.20 g (0.52 mmol) of 7-(6,8-diazabicyclo[3.2.2]non-6-yl)-1-ethyl-6,8-difluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid, 5 ml of 37% formaldehyde solution, and 5 ml of formic acid was heated under reflux for 3.6 hr. The reaction mixture was evaporated to dryness and the residue was suspended in ethanol/HCl. The solid was collected by filtration to give 0.16 g of the title compound as the hydrochloride salt, mp ≤300°.
