A solution of methyl (E)-7-[3-(4-fluorophenyl)bicyclo[3.2.1]oct-2-en-2-yl]-3,5-dihydroxy-hept-6-enoate (1.30 g, 3.47 mmoles) and aqueous NaOH (5.2 ml of a 1N solution) in 15 ml methanol was stirred for 30 minutes at 25° C., cooled to 0°-5° C., acidified, diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layers were washed with brine and dried (MgSO4). Removal of the volatiles in vacuo provided 1.28 g of the solid product which was used without further purification.
