The title compound was prepared by hydrolysis of (E)-(S)-ethyl 2-ethoxy-3-{4-[3-(2′-methyl-biphenyl-4-yl)-but-2-enyloxy]-phenyl}-propionate (example 92) (918 mg, 2.0 mmol) with sodium hydroxide by a procedure analogous to that described in example 51, yielding (E)-(S)-2-ethoxy-3-{4-[3-(2′-methyl-biphenyl-4-yl)-but-2-enyloxy]-phenyl}-propionic acid as a colourless gum, which contained 0.25 mol equivalents of ethyl acetate; 586 mg (64%).
