The title compound was prepared from (E,E)-(S)-ethyl 3-(4′-{3-[4-(2-ethoxy-2-ethoxycarbonyl-ethyl)-phenoxy]-1-methyl-propenyl}-biphenyl-3-yl)-but-2-enoate (example 111) (190 mg, 0.34 mmol) and sodium hydroxide (1M, 1.4 ml, 1.4 mmol) by a procedure analogous to that described in example 51, yielding (E,E)-(S)-3-(4′-{3-[4-(2-carboxy-2-ethoxy-ethyl)-phenoxy]-1-methyl-propenyl}-biphenyl-3-yl)-but-2-enoic acid (135 mg, 79%) as a colourless solid.
