Reaction Steps
To a solution of 2,2,2-trifluoro-1-(6-methoxy-2-methyl-1H-indol-3-yl)-ethanone 71a (1.3 g, 5.05 mmole) in 20 ml anhydrous THF was added ethyl iodide (2.36 g, 15.15 mmole) and sodium hydride (404 mg, 60% in mineral oil, 10.1 mmole) with ice bath cooling. The mixture was warmed slowly to room temperature and stirred for an additional four hours. The reaction was quenched with water and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated under rot vap. The residue was purified by column chromatography (eluting with 20-30% EtOAc in hexanes) to give a brown oil (580 mg, 40% yield). 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ7.91 (1H, d, J=8.9 Hz), 6.93 (1H, dd, J=2.3, 8.9 Hz), 6.82 (1H, d, J=2.3 Hz), 4.18 (2H, m), 3.88 (3H, s), 2.76 (3H, s), 1.40 (3H, m).
