The product of step 1 (20.3 g) was treated with 135 g OXONE™ in 300 mL 1:1 MeOH/water for 2 h. The mixture was partitioned between methylene chloride and water, the organic layer was separated, washed, dried, and evaporated to dryness to yield 6-methanesulfonyl-2-methyl-indole-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester (16 g) as a solid.
