Procedure

23 g of this ester dissolved in 200 ml of ethanol are hydrogenated under 60 lbs of pressure in the presence of Raney nickel. The theoretical quantity of hydrogen is absorbed in 3 hours. After filtration of the catalyst, the filtrate is concentrated in vacuo and the residue is distilled. In this manner 31 g of 4-(3-trifluoromethylphenyl)piperazin-1-ylbutanoic acid ethyl ester are obtained, b.p.0.3 mm Hg =146°-147° C.
