Reaction Steps
4.0 g of 1-carboxymethyl-6-methyl-2-(4'-chlorophenyl)-4-oxonicotinate is suspended in 40 g of 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and heated at 80°-85° C. for two hours. The reaction mixture is cooled and acidified to give a white precipitate. This precipitate is collected by filtration to yield 2.9 g of 1-carboxymethyl-6-methyl-2-(4'-chlorophenyl)-4-oxonicotinic acid. mp (CH3CN)=158°-162° C.
