35 g. of crude ethyl 2-methyl-1-phenyl-5-(4'-chlorophenyl)-4-oxonicotinate was suspended in 350 g. of 5% NaOH in 1:1 methanol/water and refluxed for 6 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled. This yielded a precipitate of sodium 2-methyl-1-phenyl-5-(4'-chlorophenyl)-4-oxonicotinate which was collected by filtration and resuspended in dilute aqueous HCl to provide 5.3 g. of 2-methyl-1-phenyl-5-(4'-chlorophenyl)-4-oxonicotinic acid, m.p. (acetonitrile)-209°-209° C.
