6-(2-Oxo-ethyl)-piperidine-1,2-dicarboxylic acid 1-benzyl ester 2-methyl ester (Compound 236, 0.4 g, 1.25 mmol), trimethyl orthoformate (5 mL) and p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (0.03 g) were combined, and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 12 hours. Aqueous NaHCO3 (25 mL) was added and the reaction was extracted with CHCl3 (3×100 mL). The combined organic layer was dried over MgSO4 and concentrated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (1:2 EtOAc/hexanes) to afford Compound 237 (0.441 g, 96%). Rf=0.75 (1:1 EtOAc/hexanes).
