To a solution of 6.0 g (15.8 mmol) of 7-chloro-6-nitro-4-oxo-1-{[2-(trimethylsilyl)ethoxy]methyl}-1,4-dihydro-3-quinolinecarbonitrile in 120 mL of dimethyl sulfoxide is added 5.13 g (79.0 mmol) of sodium azide and the resulting mixture is stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The mixture is then heated at 60° C. for 10 minutes, room temperature for 1 hour and then poured on to ice. The solid is collected by filtration, washed thoroughly with water and dried in vacuo to yield 6.1 g of 7-azido-6-nitro-4-oxo-1-{[2-(trimethylsilyl)ethoxy]methyl}-1,4-dihydro-3-quinolinecarbonitrile as a yellow solid.
