Procedure

To a well-stirred suspension of lithium aluminum hydride (0.3 g, 7.9 mmol) in diethyl ether (20 mL) at 0° C. under nitrogen was added a solution of the ketone 3 (0.47 g, 1.52 mmol) in ether (20 mL). After stirring for 1.5 h the reaction mixture was quenched by the sequential addition of water (0.3 mL), 15% aqueous sodium hydroxide (0.3 mL) and water (1 mL) and stirred for 30 min. The inorganic precipitate was filtered out and washed with ether (3×10 mL). The ether extracts and washings were combined and concentrated to afford a mixture (4:1) of the 3α-and 3β-alcohols 4 as a foam (0.47 g, quant).
