Procedure
2-[2-(1-Benzyloxycarbonyl-piperidin-4-yl)-2-hydroxycarbamoyl-ethane sulfonyl]-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline-9-carboxylic acid 2,2,2-trichloro-ethyl ester (135 mg) and 0.1N sodium hydroxide (4.2 ml) in methanol were stirred at room temperature for 3.5 h. The methanol was removed under reduced pressure and the residue partitioned between dichloromethane (20 ml) and 5% citric acid solution (5 ml). The aqueous was extracted with 10% methanol in dichloromethane (2×20 ml) and the combined organics washed with water (2×30 ml) and evaporated under reduced pressure to give the title compound (82 mg, 80%) as a white solid.
