3,4,5-Trimethoxybenzothioamide (2.5 g) and 90% ethyl bromopyruvate (2.62 g) were added to ethanol (20 mL), and the mixture was stirred at 80° C. for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium hydrogencarbonate, water and saturated brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was then purified by column chromatography on silica gel (hexane:ethyl acetate=1:1) and further recrystallized from ethyl acetate-hexane to obtain the title compound.
