5-(3,4,5-Trimethoxyphenyl)thiophene-2-carboaldehyde (662 mg) was dissolved in methanol (50 mL), and to the solution sodium borohydride (180 mg) was gradually added under ice cooling. After stirring the mixture at room temperature for 1 hour, the reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue was dissolved in chloroform. The resultant organic layer was washed with water and saturated brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (hexane:ethyl acetate=3:1 to 2:1) to obtain the title compound.
