Benzyloxyacetaldehyde (5.27 ml, 37.5 mmol) was treated in the same manner as described above for the synthesis of 3-pentylamino-phthalic acid dimethyl ester. The residue (oil) was purified by chromatography (6:3:1 methylene chloride/hexane/ethyl acetate) to give 7.98 g (78%) of yellow oil: 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) d 7.38–7.26 (m, 5H), 6.89–6.77 (m, 3H), 4.57 (s, 2H), 3.85 (s, 3H), 3.82 (s, 3H), 3.69 (t, J=5.5 Hz, 2H), 3.38 (q, J=5.4 Hz, 2H).
