Environmental considerations: Water spill: Neutralize with dilute acid or removable strong acid. Add calcium hypochlorite. Use mechanical dredges or lifts to remove immobilized masses of pollutants and precipitates.

Environmental considerations: Land spill: Dig a pit, pond, lagoon, or holding area to contain liquid or solid material. /SRP: If time permits, pits, ponds, lagoons, soak holes, or holding areas should be contained with a flexible impermeable membrane liner./ Cover solids with a plastic sheet to prevent dissolving in rain or fire fighting water.

Remove slowly into a large container of water. Add soda ash slightly by stirring. After 24 hr, decant or siphon into another container. Neutralize with 6M-HCl.

In cases of thiocyanate exposure, get fresh air and medical attention. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting but give large quantities of water. Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes in case of exposure to skin or the eyes. (L217)

Antidotes to cyanide poisoning include hydroxocobalamin and sodium nitrite, which release the cyanide from the cytochrome system, and rhodanase, which is an enzyme occurring naturally in mammals that combines serum cyanide with thiosulfate, producing comparatively harmless thiocyanate. Oxygen therapy can also be administered. (L97)

... In the presence of 50 mm ammonium thiocyanate, the potency of bicuculline to displace specifically bound (3)H-GABA was increased, with the magnitide of this increase being greater in some brain areas than others. Ammonium thiocyanate also increased the potency of bicuculline to inhibit GABA-activated benzodiazepine receptor binding, a biochemical measure of GABA receptor function. Ammonium thiocyanate selectively abolished the high affinity GABA-binding site without affecting either the low affinity component or GABA-activated benzodiazepine receptor binding.

Thiocyanates are known to affect the thyroid glands, reducing the ability of the gland to produce hormones that are necessary for the normal function of the body. Exposure to high levels of cyanide for a short time harms the brain and heart and can even cause coma and death. (L191)

Exposure to high levels of cyanide for a short time harms the brain and heart and can even cause coma, seizures, apnea, cardiac arrest and death. Chronic inhalation of cyanide causes breathing difficulties, chest pain, vomiting, blood changes, headaches, and enlargement of the thyroid gland. Skin contact with cyanide salts can irritate and produce sores. (L96, L97)

Mechanism of Action · 1 Eintrag

Thiocyanate is a potent inhibitor of iodide transport and is a competitive substrate for the thyroid peroxidase, but it does not appear to be concentrated in the thyroid. Blockage of the iodide trapping mechanism has a disruptive effect on the thyroid-pituitary axis, similar to iodine deficiency. The blood levels of T4 and T3 decrease, resulting in a compensatory increase in the secretion of TSH by the pituitary gland. The hypertrophy and hyperplasia of follicular cells following sustained exposure results in an increased thyroid weight and the development of goiter. /Thiocyanate/

Metabolism/Metabolites · 2 Einträge

Thiocyanates can appear in the body after metabolization of cyanides by rhodanese. When thiocyanates enter the body, they normally breaks down in aqueous solution to yield sulfate ions. However, thiocyanates are also found in the thyroid fluids. Immediately following exposure to thiocyanate containing solutions, the cystic fibrosis conductance regulator Cl‰ЫТ channel exhibits high unitary SCN‰ЫТ conductance and anomalous mole fraction behaviour. Thiocyanates is normally excreted in urine. (A140, A142, A143, A144) Organic nitriles are converted into cyanide ions through the action of cytochrome P450 enzymes in the liver. Cyanide is rapidly absorbed and distributed throughout the body. Cyanide is mainly metabolized into thiocyanate by either rhodanese or 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfur transferase. Cyanide metabolites are excreted in the urine. (L96)

Definitionammonium thiocyanate: A colourless, soluble crystalline compound,NH4NCS. It is made by theaction of hydrogen cyanide on ammoniumsulphide or from ammoniaand carbon disulphide in ethanol. Onheating, it turns into its isomerthiourea, SC(NH2)2. Its solutions givea characteristic blood-red colour withiron(III) compounds and so are employedas a test for ferric iron. Ammoniumthiocyanate is used as arapid fixative in photography and asan ingredient in making explosives.
