Health Hazards · 2 Einträge

Thallium is one of the more toxic elements both as an acute and a chronic poison. Effects of exposure are cumulative and onset of symptoms may be delayed 12 to 24 hours. May be fatal if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin. Irritating to skin and eyes. Readily absorbed through the skin and digestive tract. Ingestion of soluble thallium compounds has caused many deaths Ingestion of sublethal quantities may cause nausea, vomiting, diarhea, abdominal pain, and bleeding from the gut accompanied or followed by drooping eyelids, crossed eyes, weakness, numbness, tingling of arms and legs, trembling, tightness and pain in the chest. Loss of hair may occur in two to three weeks. Severe intoxication may cause prostration, rapid heartbeat, convulsions, and psychosis. Some effects may be permanent. (USCG, 1999)

· Toxic by ingestion.;· Inhalation of dust is toxic.;· Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases.;· Contact with substance may cause severe burns to skin and eyes.;· Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause environmental contamination.

Hazards SummaryCauses eye and skin irritation; Highly toxic when ingested, inhaled, or absorbed through skin; [CHEMINFO MSDS] LD50 (ingestion) = 15 mg/kg (mouse); [HSDB] See Thallium and linked occupational diseases.

First Aid · 2 Einträge

EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.;SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital for treatment after washing the affected areas.;INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing.;INGESTION: Some heavy metals are VERY TOXIC POISONS, especially if their salts are very soluble in water (e.g., lead, chromium, mercury, bismuth, osmium, and arsenic). IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center and locate activated charcoal, egg whites, or milk in case the medical advisor recommends administering one of them. Also locate Ipecac syrup or a glass of salt water in case the medical advisor recommends inducing vomiting. Usually, this is NOT RECOMMENDED outside of a physician's care. If advice from a physician is not readily available and the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give the victim a glass of activated charcoal slurry in water or, if this is not available, a glass of milk, or beaten egg whites and IMMEDIATELY transport victim to a hospital. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, assure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital. (NTP, 1992)

General First Aid:;· Call 911 or emergency medical service.;· Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved, take precautions to protect themselves and avoid contamination.;· Move victim to fresh air if it can be done safely.;· Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult.;· If victim is not breathing:;-- DO NOT perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation; the victim may have ingested or inhaled the substance.;-- If equipped and pulse detected, wash face and mouth, then give artificial respiration using a proper respiratory medical device (bag-valve mask, pocket mask equipped with a one-way valve or other device).;-- If no pulse detected or no respiratory medical device available, provide continuous compressions. Conduct a pulse check every two minutes or monitor for any signs of spontaneous respirations.;· Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes.;· For minor skin contact, avoid spreading material on unaffected skin.;· In case of contact with substance, remove immediately by flushing skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes.;· For severe burns, immediate medical attention is required.;· Effects of exposure (inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact) to substance may be delayed.;· Keep victim calm and warm.;· Keep victim under observation.;· For further assistance, contact your local Poison Control Center.;· Note: Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) should be done by trained professionals.;Specific First Aid:;· Contaminated clothing may be a fire risk when dry.

Studies have been made of the effect of inhibitors of energy metabolism on maintenance of Na and K concentrations, as well as on accumulation of Rb (as an analogue of K) in single neurones of the mollusk Planorbarius corneus. Monovalent thallium which is capable of inhibiting the respiratory chain and destroying mitochondrial structure, significantly inhibited Rb accumulation in the neurones. The decrease in accumulation of Rb by monoiodoacetate and thallium nitrate was less significant as compared with that produced by a specific blocker of Na/K-pump, ouabain.

Adverse EffectsNeurotoxin - Sensorimotor;Occupational hepatotoxin - Secondary hepatotoxins: the potential for toxic effect in the occupational setting is based on cases of poisoning by human ingestion or animal experimentation.

THE DISTRIBUTION OF THALLIUM WAS DETERMINED IN 57 AUTOPSIED TISSUES, INCL BLOOD, OF A PATIENT WHO HAD BEEN ORALLY ADMIN 500 mCi THALLOUS NITRATE (TlNO3) FOLLOWED BY ... 45 MG DOSES ... THALLIUM(I) SULFATE (Tl2SO4) ... UNTIL 225 MG HAD BEEN GIVEN. THE BLOOD SHOWED A RAPID RISE WITHIN 2 HR TO A LEVEL OF 3% OF THE ADMIN RADIOISOTOPE ... TO 1.6%. SOME SPECIFIC LOCALIZATION OF THALLIUM ... WAS FOUND IN THE SCALP HAIR, KIDNEYS, HEART MUSCLE, PRIMARY BONE TUMOR, AND SPLEEN, IN THAT DECREASING ORDER. ... CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY ADRENAL MEDULLA, BONE TUMOR FROM LUNG, PANCREAS, SCALP SKIN, AND LIVER, RIB MARROW, THYROID, ADRENAL CORTEX, AND PITUITARY. ... A DIFFERENT DISTRIBUTION PICTURE WAS FOUND IN THE RAT ... INJECTED WITH 23 UG TlNO3. ... 2 DAYS AFTER DOSING, THE KIDNEYS CONTAINED THE HIGHEST CONCN FOLLOWED BY THE GUT, GONADS, AND PANCREAS. ... THESE DIFFERENCES IN LOCALIZATION OF THALLIUM SUGGEST CAUTION IN TRANSLATING RESULTS OBTAINED IN ANIMALS TO MAN.

... GAVE RADIOACTIVE THALLOUS NITRATE & THALLOUS SULFATE ORALLY TO 1 PT WITH METASTATIC OSTEOGENIC SARCOMA & FOUND RATE OF EXCRETION IN URINE TO BE 3.2% PER DAY OF AMOUNT REMAINING IN BODY. THALLIUM EXCRETION IN BOTH URINE & FECES MAY PERSIST FOR MANY WEEKS IN SPITE OF LOW PLASMA LEVELS IN POISONED PATIENTS.
