EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.

Safe StorageProvision to contain effluent from fire extinguishing. Separated from food and feedstuffs.
Nonfire Spill Response · 1 Eintrag

SMALL SPILLS AND LEAKAGE: If a spill of this chemical occurs, FIRST REMOVE ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION, then you should dampen the solid spill material with acetone and transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use absorbent paper dampened with acetone to pick up any remaining material. Seal your contaminated clothing and the absorbent paper in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Solvent wash all contaminated surfaces with acetone followed by washing with a soap and water solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned.

Disposal Methods · 1 Eintrag

SRP: At the time of review, criteria for land treatment or burial (sanitary landfill) disposal practices are subject to significant revision. Prior to implementing land disposal of waste residue (including waste sludge), consult with environmental regulatory agencies for guidance on acceptable disposal practices.

Environmental Fate · 3 Einträge

TERRESTRIAL FATE: An average Rf value of 0.00, obtained in a soil TLC bioassay, indicates that chloranil is immobile in this soil system(1). Chloranil adsorbed strongly to two soil samples; amending the two soil samples with humic material resulted in the increased adsorption of the pesticide(2). Based on limited data, chloranil is expected to biodegrade in soil(SRC). Chloranil at 50 ug/ml had half-lives of 6, 4, and 5 days in non-sterile samples of soil, sewage, and fresh water, respectively(3). The rates of disappearance of chloranil were slightly lower in the sterilized samples. Different degradation products were reported for the non-sterile samples(3). Volatilization of chloranil is not expected from moist soil surfaces(SRC) given an estimated Henry's Law constant of 6.6X10-9 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), calculated from experimental values for vapor pressure(4) and water solubility(5). Volatilization from dry soil surfaces(SRC) should not occur based on a measured vapor pressure of 5.1X10-6 mm Hg(4). Chloranil should photodegrade on soil surfaces; chloranil, exposed to sunlight, forms the tetrachlorohydroquinone and the trichlorohydroxyquinone in 68% and 28% yields, respectively(6).

AQUATIC FATE: Adsorption to organic matter in the water is expected(SRC); chloranil was shown to bind to dissolved humic acids in water either through a charge-transfer or electron donor-acceptor mechanism(1). Based on limited data, chloranil should biodegrade in water(SRC). Chloranil at 50 ug/ml had measured half-lives of 6, 4, and 5 days in non-sterile samples of soil, sewage, and fresh water, respectively(2). The rates of disappearance of chloranil were slightly lower in the sterilized samples. Different degradation products were reported for the non-sterile samples(2). Chloranil is not expected to volatilize from water surfaces based on an estimated Henry's Law constant of 6.6X10-9 atm-cu m/mole(SRC), calculated from experimental values for vapor pressure(3) and water solubility(4). An estimated BCF value of 30(1,SRC), from a measured water solubility(4), suggests that chloranil may moderately bioconcentrate in aquatic organisms(SRC), according to a recommended classification scheme(5).

ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), chloranil, which has a measured vapor pressure of 5.1X10-6 mm Hg at 25 °C(2), will exist in both the vapor and particulate phases in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase chloranil is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be about 14 days(3,SRC). Particulate-phase chloranil may be physically removed from the air by wet and dry deposition(SRC).

Soil Adsorption/Mobility · 1 Eintrag

An average Rf value of 0.00, obtained in a soil TLC bioassay (Hagerstown silty clay loam with 2.5% organic matter, 39.5% clay, pH of 6.8), indicates that chloranil is immobile in this soil system(1). Chloranil adsorbed strongly onto two soil samples (A= pH 7.4, organic carbon of 0.5%; B= pH 8.2, organic carbon 1.0%); adsorption was increased when the two soil samples were amended with humic material. Retention of chloranil was believed due to the chemical reactivity characteristic of its quinonic structure(2). Chloranil was shown to bind to dissolved humic acids in water through either a charge-transfer or electron donor-acceptor mechanism(3).

FUNGICIDAL PROPERTIES... ACTIVITY ATTRIBUTED TO ROLE IN OXIDATION-REDUCTION PROCESSES AND TO INHIBITION OF CARBOXYLASES.

... Tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone, a cmpd previously shown to inactivate glutathione S-transferases very efficiently by covalent binding in or close to the active site, completely prevented the alkylation of the enzyme by iodoacetamide, indicating that the reaction had taken place with the cysteine residues. ... Evidence was obtained for the covalent binding of three benzoquinone molecules per subunit, ie equivalent to the number of cysteine residues present. This threefold binding /resulted/ with a fourfold molar excess of the benzoquinone, illustrating high reactivity of this cmpd. Comparison of the number of amino acid residues modified by tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone with the decr of catalytic activity revealed an almost complete inhibition after modification of one cysteine residue.

Verwendenp-Chloranil is used as a dye intermediate, oxidizing agent, vulcanizing agent and dehydrogenation reagent. It is also used to make chloranil electrodes for pH measurements. Further, it serves as a hydrogen acceptor and used for the aromatization reactions such as conversion of cyclohexadienes to the benzene derivatives. It is used to test the secondary amine. In addition to this, it is employed as a precursor to prepare diaziquone, which is used as a cancer chemotherapeutic agent.
